Drivers anticipate people at crosswalks. Crossing outside of those predictable areas could end in tragedy. In some instances, students may be crossing while walking to and from school without the knowledge of their parents. In other cases, parents may be facilitating or encouraging this behavior. Savi ng a couple of minutes is not worth the safety of our children. Early in my career as an administrator, one of my students crossed the street outside of a crosswalk. The lives of the driver and a child/family were irrevocably changed. The driver who was following all traffic laws will always be haunted by the incident and the child and their family’s lives will never be the same. Contact at a very low rate of speed resulted in a fall, a blow to the head, and a traumatic brain injury that the now young adult will probably never fully recover from.
